Preamble
Internal aid. Key to the maker's intention. Cannot override clear enacting words. Used when ambiguity exists.
Literal / Grammatical Rule
Plain ordinary meaning. Words speak the intention. Applied unless absurdity results.
Ejusdem Generis
General words following specific words take colour from them. Requires a distinct genus.
Golden Rule

Harmonious Construction

- A Sales Tax Act exempts "vegetables" from levy. A vendor selling green chillies claims they are vegetables. Decide.
- An Act came into force on 1 January 2020. A was charged in March 2022. While trial was pending, the Act was repealed in January 2024. What is the effect on the pending trial?
